Where Does Our Water Come From?

Updated: 11/2024

Do you ever turn on the faucet
and wonder where that water comes from?

Americans drink more than 1 billion glasses of drinking water per day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). And, while adults are drinking more water than before, we often take this colorless, odorless, and essential liquid for granted. The United States Geological Society (USGS) notes water composes 60% of our bodies — ensuring the proper functioning of our bodies and making the basic molecules of life, including DNA, cell membranes, and proteins, work.

Our drinking water comes from two primary natural resources: surface water (think lakes and rivers) and groundwater. Typically, the water flows from intake points to a water treatment facility and then through our public water systems into homes. In the case of the LDWA’s sources, the quality of the water is so good that minimal water treatment is needed. We slightly chlorinate the water to address the natural contaminates that are picked up as the water as it flows over the ground and through rock.

The Leeds Domestic Waterusers Association’s [LDWA] currently gets its water from LDWA Spring and Highland Well. The water from the spring is shared with the Leeds Water Company (LWC) irrigation company. LDWA portion amounts averages about 120 gallons per minute. The well can produce approximately 335 gallons per minute. The total average source capacity adds up to 455 gallons per minute.

Drinking spring water can have many health benefits, including:

  • Hydration :: Spring water is a great source of hydration and helps your body absorb water efficiently. Proper hydration helps your organs function properly, and helps regulate your body temperature and blood flow.
  • Minerals :: Spring water contains essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which support bone health, muscle function, and nerve signaling.
  • Immune system :: The minerals and trace elements in spring water can help support your immune system. Spring water is also naturally pure, which means fewer contaminants that can burden your immune system.
  • Heart health :: Spring water can help lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol, and may help lower blood pressure.
  • Digestion :: Spring water can help promote healthy digestion and relieve constipation.
  • Skin health :: Spring water can hydrate your skin and give you a healthy glow.
  • Taste :: Spring water has a clean, refreshing taste and trace elements that make it taste better.
  • pH balance :: Spring water is pH balanced due to the presence of trace minerals like bicarbonate and sodium. A pH level that’s slightly alkaline or neutral can help boost your body’s natural immune system.
